Clinic Staff

Dr. Virginia Kennaway, D.V.M. has been the veterinarian at the Jerome Humane Society since its inception in 1992. She is a graduate of Washington State University's School of Veterinary Medicine (1987).

Dr. Kennaway advocates a holistic ("whole patient") approach to veterinary medicine. While much of her practice involves western veterinary techniques, Dr. Kennaway often supplements these with alternative treatment modalities, as appropriate for the patient & client. These include homeopathy, herbal medicine, nutrition & acupuncture. She is a trained practitioner of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine & Veterinary Acupuncture.

In addition to her work at the Jerome Humane Society clinic, Dr. Kennaway also has an active mobile vet practice serving the Phoenix metropolitan area. Dr. Kennaway treats most small animals, including birds, reptiles & "pocket pets". She does draw the line at cows & monkeys, though.

The clinic runs smoothly due to the continuing dedication of its volunteers:

Marge Mitchell is one of our original technicians, & is still going strong. She has been ably assisting Dr. Kennaway for over 10 years, & can anticipate the doctor's every need. She is highly skilled, and also has a unique ability to relate to the animals in her care. No animal comes out of surgery without being cuddled & kissed by Marge. (It really helps!) Marge also organizes the clinic's weekly schedule & handles the appointment booking. As if that's not enough, Marge is also a master chef, has owned several restaurants, & has co-authored 2 cookbooks: The Bakery Lane Soup Bowl Cook Book & Soup Bowl West.

Sally Dryer, as a child, voiced the roles of Lucy, Violet & Patty in the Charlie Brown specials. Little did she know then just how prophetic Lucy's line "Blech. I've been kissed by a dog!" would turn out to be – it happens all the time now! On Thursdays, Sally is a veterinary technician for the Jerome Humane Society. Not only is Sally great with the animals, she's an extremely capable technician -- organized, knowledgeable & eager to learn. She's also a lot of fun, & gives great parties. Sally is also the owner of Soiled Doves Studio in Jerome, is a mixed-media sculptor, & is a master framer. (She's even framed a Michaelangelo!)

Ann Miranda is the newest of the JHS technicians, & has already become an integral member of the team. You know when you're talking to Ann from her darling little Kiwi accent -- she's from New Zealand, you see. Ann's pride & joy is a stray kitty from Clarkdale named Roo-Roo who follows Ann around like a puppy.
