Background & Mission

With the help of the Town of Jerome and the hard work of our many volunteers (including Bob Barker), in 1992 the Jerome Humane Society opened an animal clinic to perform surgery, treat hurt and sick animals and give innoculations against common diseases. Since then, we have spayed and neutered well over 1,000 cats and dogs. To encourage pet owners to sterilize their companion animals, the Society pays half of the spay and neuter fees for Jerome residents. We also do low-cost spay/neuter, vaccinations for the surrounding communities, including Clarkdale, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, & Sedona. For Jerome feral animals, we pay the entire fee.

The clinic is open every Thursday by appointment from noon to 5:00 pm. Our licensed veterinarian, Dr. Virginia Kennaway drives up from Phoenix to run the clinic, with the able assistance of volunteer tech help from the Jerome area.

We originally operated our clinic out of a private home (graciously offered by Mary Wills), as was approved by the Arizona Veterinary Board. The Town of Jerome donated 3 rooms in the basement of the old schoolhouse which had previously been used for storage. Volunteers in the community helped to rennovate the rooms into a reasonable approximation of a vet clinic.

With the help of a $16,000 startup grant from Bob Barker's spay & neuter fund we were able to purchase new & used equipment for the clinic. Continued support from Bob Barker has enabled us to purchase a new X-ray machine in July, 2003. We are eternally grateful for his support.

Recently, the Town of Jerome has given us the remaining space in the lower level of the old schoolhouse. We are thrilled to have this extra space available to us!

Ongoing Funding Activities

We have also received donations from various town organizations including the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department, the Jerome Bike Jamboree, the Town of Jerome itself, & other organisations. Local performers have donated their talents & time for benefit concerts & performances.

Our volunteers regularly organize fund-raising events, such as flea markets, concerts, silent auctions, raffles & dinners. We also get monetary support from shop keepers in Jerome who find room on their counters for donation cans. This is a very important source of income for the Society.

Membership dues, $12.00 for single membership and $18.00 for a family, is another source of income, as are donations from friends and family everywhere.
